New helmet can help motorcycle riders in an emergency
There is a new kind of motorcycle helmet being designed that can potentially save the lives of many motorcycle riders involved in accidents.
It is yet to be released on the market, but is testing well and proving to cause quite a good stir. It is designed to work similar to that of the On-star feature in vehicles.
When a rider is in a crash, the technology in the helmet is designed to call for emergency services.
Once the rider puts the helmet on, it is automatically activated. There are sensors that can detect if the rider slows down very rapidly and will be beeping for around a minute. If the rider does not deactivate the device in that time, it will use its cellular communication ability to call for help.
It is also equipped with a GPS navigational device that will deliver the location of the rider who needs the emergency assistance. While it still is in development and needs to be tested and re-tested, it is likely to appear on the market in the near future.
The next question of course for most people is how much it will cost. Although an exact price has not been set, it is estimated that the new helmets will cost about $50-60 more than a regular helmet.
Even with the extra expense, it is probable that the new helmet will be a success. After all, paying a few dollars more for a piece of equipment that can potentially save your life is worth it to a lot of riders. And those that live in states governing the use of helmets and make them mandatory, it is already a purchase they need to make, why not invest in your safety for a few bucks more!
